Stocks finished higher as implied volatility fell, with the VIX1-day dropping from around 17 to just 10.7. That sharp decline in IV likely drove much of the market’s gains today, as falling implied volatility reduced the need for market makers to maintain short equity hedges, prompting them to buy back those hedges and providing support for stock prices. With limited room for IV to fall further, I expect the VIX1-day to be closer to 20 than 10 or 11 by Wednesday at 1:59 PM ET.

Dispersion also has a few more days to run, with most of the mega-caps reporting this week and Apple early next week. Elevated single-stock implied volatility ahead of these earnings reports is helping to keep implied dispersion elevated relative to index-level volatility. Once earnings are out of the way and single-stock implied volatility begins to decline, the DSPX index should also start to fall. Dispersion is unlikely to rise anywhere close to the levels seen in July, and a move back toward 30 over the next couple of months seems increasingly likely.

The dollar strengthened today, with the dollar index breaking out of what appears to be a bullish flag or pennant pattern. A sustained move above the pattern’s upper trendline would help confirm the breakout and suggest a more substantial move higher, potentially pushing the index towards 103.5 or beyond, with most of those gains likely coming against the euro.

Further dollar strength is likely to put additional downward pressure on silver prices, potentially driving them into the mid-$40s. Silver has already broken below its July support level, which is now likely to act as resistance. Silver has maintained a strong inverse relationship with the dollar for some time, and I don’t believe there is much reason for that dynamic to change in the near term.

TradingView chart comparing Silver price, now near 53.91, against the U.S. Dollar Index at 102.022, with their rolling correlation below showing a strong current negative reading of -0.73, reflecting silver's typical inverse relationship with the dollar
